Los Bitchos – Holding Cell (feat. Ambrose Kenny-Smith)
Los Bitchos avoided using vocals for two full-length albums. “Holding Cell” is the first single where vocals are used and is part of Los Bitchos & Friends Volume 1, their third full-length album which will be released on November 13 through GREAT! Records in association with !K7 Music. This single comes after Hang Up (Pt 2) (W31).
Ambrose Kenny-Smith, of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and The Murlocs, takes this one, his raw vocal and harmonica riding over one of the band’s heaviest, most guitar-forward arrangements yet. Spring reverb and syncopated Latin percussion building toward a stretch of controlled feedback near the end. Serra Petale, Josefine Jonsson, and Nic Crawshaw have said their approach to the whole record treats voice less as a lead and more as texture. “It’s been interesting to bring forward the use of voice as a texture”, and that holds here even with a vocalist this recognisable at the front of the mix. Two records of pure instrumentals, and it only takes one guest verse to prove they didn’t need to change a thing to make it work.
